January 25, 2025 - Fly to Cape May for Lunch

It was cold on Friday when Brian, Chuck and I decided to fly to Cape May for lunch.   My Red Dragon pre-heater has been getting a lot of use this new year!  In fact, the entire preceeding week was very cold, never getting above freezing.  So as soon as we were airborne, we saw the ice, on the Back River and out over the Chesapeake Bay.

Passing snow-covered Hart-Miller Island, heading out over the Bay.

It's been a long time since I've seen the Bay covered in ice like this.

Amazing geometric ice patterns.

Approaching the Eastern Shore.

Amazing.

Now over the Eastern Shore.

About to pass over the ice-clogged Chester River with Chestertown on the left.

Looking down at Dover Air Force Base.  There are lots of big C-5s and a few C-17s parked on the apron.

On the east side of Dover Air Force Base is the Air Mobility Command Museum.   I visited there 13 years ago -- Link -- I guess it's time to go back.

Now over the Delaware Bay which also has a little ice.

We enjoyed a strong tailwind and were making over 190 mph groundspeed.

Cape May Airport in sight!

Safe on deck at Cape May Airport.

Parked on the ramp for the Flight Deck Cafe.

After a lunch in which we all had delicious breakfast food, we were back in the air, heading west and bucking the inevitable headwind.

Over the Delaware Bay.

Passing by Dover Air Force Base again.

Just leaving the Eastern Shore and heading out over the Bay, looking south.

Over the Chesapeake Bay.

On final for Essex Skypark.

A little coldness isn't going to stop the Essex Skypark RVs from flying.  In fact, the engine and plane LIKES the cold air; it's only the pilot who doesn't.
